Jan Walsh writes five monthly food and beverage columns for B-Metro magazine.  She also contributes to Wine Spectator magazine and website when she finds the time and has an interesting wine collector to feature.

Appearances


Walsh has appeared on television numerous times sharing her knowledge of wine and food. She has judged numerous cook offs. 

Walsh served as a guest entrepreneur for several programs at U.A.B. and given speeches on entrepreneurship. 


And she was a presenter for the Alabama State Bar Annual Meeting 2014, with attorneys earning Continuing Legal Education credits for her session on Search Engine Optimization.

Background

Walsh grew up in Oneonta, Alabama. Both sets of her grandparents lived on working farms in Blount County. Living with her maternal grandparents for several years in her childhood, Walsh early years were spent playing on the farms and helping her grandparents with planting and gathering fruit and vegetables, canning vegetables, making jam, milking the cows, gathering farm eggs, and handpicking cotton.
 
Walsh holds an M.S. in Education from U.A.B. and a B.S. in Education from U.A.B.
She graduated M.S. 4.0 G.P.A. and graduated B.S. summa cum laude. She was awarded – The Outstanding Elementary Education Student at U.A.B. And she was awarded The Outstanding Elementary Education Student at Jefferson State Community College. She was on the 
Presidential Honor Roll – U.A.B. (seven consecutive quarters) and member of the following: Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Golden Key Honor Society. 
 
Walsh was an educator at Oneonta City Schools, from 1993-1998. Here she was honored as the school system’s Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Nominee in 1994. At OCS she also developed and advised the nationally recognized and awarded literary magazine, Expressions, in her role as an English, Writing, & Desktop Publishing Teacher. During her tenure as a teacher, she was an Invited Presenter to the Alabama Technology Conference, 1996, presenting “Transcribing Through Technology. Walsh was the Grant Recipient: Alabama Power Grant Recipient, 1994 and a Grant Recipient: Alabama State Council on the Arts, 1995, 1996, 1997.
 
Walsh served as a literary judge and critic for Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, from 1994-1998.
 
Walsh was the editorial manager for a software company, Interactive Communication & Training, from 2002-2004.
 
In 2006 Walsh achieved Level One Master Court of Sommeliers for her knowledge and expertise in wine.

Walsh serves on the Steering Committee for Alabama's oldest, charitable wine auction, Evening of Wines, which benefits the MS Society.
