Walsh is also a food and organic activist as well as a protector of animal rights. She founded Alabamians For GMO Labeling, writes and speaks on living an organic life. She also uses her writing to raise awareness of puppy mills.

Jan Walsh is a Member of the Birmingham Chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier International (LDEI), the International Wine and Food Society, Birmingham Chapter, and she is on the Steering Committee for Alabama's oldest wine auction, Evening of Wines, which supports the M.S. Society.
A former English and Writing teacher, Walsh first evolved her career from educator to editorial manager for a software company in 2002. She reinvented her career again in 2003 as a published writer and columnist. Envisioning the Internet as a platform to syndicate her local wine and food columns in 2006 led Walsh to pioneer the concept of local, profile based, internet directories, executing in multiple verticals and multiple markets, on the Internet. Today she is the founder of and partner of two digital publishing companies: Jan Walsh, LLC and LocalLawyers.com, LLC.
